I mean, I’m an atheist and he wrote Imagine and that song has become the atheist anthem. He’s also John Lennon. Don’t get me wrong, I like him, he’s just not my favorite Beatle. No, that distinction goes to George Harrison who, I think, has always been my favorite.

He’s the best musician out of the bunch. He’s the cutest. Yes he is, don’t even argue. It’s the mustache, I like mustaches. And he did this.
How can you not love a man who fakes you out with the intro to My Sweet Lord and then sings a pirate song? That’s just awesome.

Of all the things I’ve made, my favorite was a white linen skirt that had embroidered pink flowers on it. I didn’t embroider the flowers, though I started doing some embroidery after I made that skirt because I thought it was so pretty. The skirt wasn’t really anything special. It belled out at the bottom and actually was a tad fluted. The reason I liked it so much was that it was the first thing I made that was absolutely perfect. Every seem was exact, the zipper was flawless, the lining might has well been part of the fabric. And the skirt fit like a glove. I loved it.

It’s still in my closet but it’s too big now. I hadn’t thought of it until earlier this evening. A couple of days ago Katie told me she wanted to be a pirate for Halloween and that I was going to be a pirate and so was Clint. I decided that she had given me enough notice that I could sew costumes this year. The two years before I had purchased them because I didn’t have time for anything else and I haven’t sewn since Katie was born. She really doesn’t allow me to do such things.

Yesterday I went and bought the patterns and the fabric to start on shirts and pants. I figured I’d get the rest of the stuff as time went on. Wait for sales you know. Anyway, I started on the pirate situation this evening. Amazing, everything but both (yes both) of my measuring tapes were still where I had left them 3 years ago. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed sewing. I enjoy every little step. Straightening fabric, pinning, cutting, ironing, fitting, adjusting, and the actual sitting down in front of the sewing machine. Though sewing is very little sitting down in front of the machine. It’s mostly standing at the ironing board with pins in hand or pressing. I did feel a bit naked without my measuring tape around my neck but I worked it out.

Maybe I can convince Katie that letting me sew is a good idea. I want another perfect white linen skirt with pink flowers embroidered on it. Maybe this time, I’ll embroider the flowers myself.

So….. you know bees make honey, for bees. And then us humans come along and steal their honey. When we steal their honey we do things like use smoke to calm them down. We might crush them when handling them. We use other substitutions for honey to feed them so we can take their honey. We don’t give them any compensation for their honey. You know what that means, right. We shouldn’t eat honey.

Yeah, that doesn’t convince me. I have to admit, I love bees. I love honey. I’ve actually had a dream of retiring and becoming a beekeeper for quite a few years so I know a thing or two about bee keeping. I wonder, do the people who think bee keeping is so brutal ever consider that bee keepers have an interest in keeping their bees healthy and safe and aren’t just stomping around out there throwing screens around and such. They have a vested interest in protecting their hives. I assure you, beekeepers out there are highly interested in good quality feeding. And you don’t take all the hives’ honey - that would be stupid.

Anyway, I just can’t see myself ever giving up honey. It doesn’t make any kind of sense from a health perspective and I don’t see any legitimate animal cruelty going on here.

I’m on day 3. This hasn’t been hard so far. Of course, I’ve eaten at home every day.

Last night I ate the most delicious salad I think I’ve ever tasted and it had 3 ingredients - arugula, tomatoes, and almonds. The dressing helped of course but it was just balsamic vinegar, sunflower oil, and sugar. I think anything with sugar and almonds is destined to be good. This morning I ate an omelette and toast so that’s really no different from what I would normally eat. This just doesn’t seem to be too difficult. I’m sure I will have my challenges.

I hate to say this because it could be completely unrelated but I swear I feel better. I also swear I’m eating more food. That’s probably because I have all this new stuff in my house and that’s a thing with me. Whenever I bring new stuff into my house I have to eat it - even if I’m not hungry. That will work itself out. When I know exactly what everything tastes like I won’t need to sample it anymore

I’m considering going vegetarian.

Well, I’m more than considering it. I could write a novel about how and why but it’s not because of the animals. I do love animals but I’m not convinced that a strawberry doesn’t cry out in pain when it’s picked. We just can’t hear it and it doesn’t have eyes and a nose we can relate to and project human emotions onto. How do we know a pig’s highest goal in life isn’t to go to slaughter and end up on our breakfast plate? Really now?

Anyway, this is all about health. Heart disease is a serious concern for me and I am looking for any way to keep myself from dying young. I also spend a lot of time worrying about looking old and I can’t help but notice that every damn time I look at some celebrity that is 20+ years older than me and think, “Gosh they look fantastic, what do they do to keep themselves looking so great?” I find out they are a vegetarian/vegan. So I’m going to give this a try.

So I’ve spend a bunch of time reading websites and I bought a couple of cookbooks. This shouldn’t be too hard for me. I’m not that crazy about meat anyway. The problem is I don’t trust a lot of the info. So much of it is emotionally driven rather than fact based. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on health matters but when you take meat out of the equation there is a lot I don’t know. I do know a few places where I need to do some research.

I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding soy.
I know that natural is better and this is what concerns me about all the substitutes, especially the vegan stuff. Butter is pretty natural, something that was never meant to be butter but has been all mangled up to kind of resemble it kind of creeps me out.
I know I need to learn a lot about the fat content regarding fruit.
I know I need to read up about all the varieties of beans.
I know I need to settle this matter, once and for all, about whether or not cooking veggies in their skins makes any difference.

So I’ve got a lot of research to do but I figure I’ll get it at some point. I’ve got a basic idea because I’ve spent a lot of time trying to eat healthy my whole life. And my parents were health nuts to the extreme. It’s probably in my blood. Unfortunately so is heart disease and diabetes.

My sister and I disagree on nearly everything. I think maybe tacos and steak might be the only things we both think are awesome. She repeatedly harasses me about the way I dress and I look at her and just shake my head. I told her the other day I wanted to find a plaid shirt. I had a very specific shirt in mind - it has snaps instead of buttons, it’s long sleeved, and the sleeves can be rolled up then secured with a strap of fabric that attaches to a snap. She seemed to think this shirt sounded good. She has shirts that are a bit like this. The plaid and the snaps part at least.

I found that shirt today. I bought it at Guess. She is going to die when she sees it because it has little shimmery threads running through it and jeweled studded Guess logos on each side of the breast pockets - 4 in total. I just can’t wait. I know she will think that I found the worst possible version of that shirt. I think I will wash it today so I can make sure she sees me wearing it tomorrow.

I’m going to come up with a better little tag line. “It’s my life, I do what I want” is not going to stay. I put it there because when I was fixing that section my sister and husband were making fun of day time talk shows with all the little 13 year old tramps who always just repeat, “It’s my life, I do what I want!” or some such tripe. It’s what came to mind so it’s what I stuck up there. I’m going to come up with something better. At least I hope so.
